What is the PDF Watermark?
A PDF watermarker stamps a string of text across every page (or a chosen range) at a specified angle, opacity, and size. It's how documents get marked CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, COPY, or with a recipient's name before being shared. The text is real PDF content — copy-pasteable and selectable — not a flattened image.
How to use the PDF Watermark
- 1
Drop in a PDF
Drag a PDF onto the upload area, or click to browse. The first page renders as a live preview surface.
- 2
Type the watermark text
CONFIDENTIAL, DRAFT, your client's name — anything. Adjust font size (12-200), color, opacity (a faint 20-30% reads as a background, 70%+ dominates), and rotation (45° diagonal is the classic).
- 3
Pick a position
Center, four corners, or Tile (repeats the watermark across the page). The preview updates live so you can dial it in before saving.
- 4
Save the watermarked PDF
Click Apply & Download. @cantoo/pdf-lib draws the watermark on every page using the standard Helvetica font. Text and links underneath remain selectable.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I watermark only some pages?
Yes. Toggle Apply to a range and enter pages like "1-3, 7". Pages outside the range are saved untouched. Useful when you want a DRAFT stamp on the cover and approvals only, or to protect a sample preview while leaving full pages clean.
Does the watermark go on top of or behind the content?
On top by default — that's what makes CONFIDENTIAL stamps and DRAFT marks visible regardless of background. Drop opacity to 25-30% if you want it to read more like a background tint without burying the text underneath. The text underneath stays selectable either way.
Can I use my logo as a watermark?
Not in this tool — it's text-only. An image-stamp tool is on the roadmap for logos and scanned signatures. For now, type the watermark text in caps with a font weight that mirrors your brand, then tune size and opacity until it reads like a stamp.
